About BDCs

Business Development Companies (BDCs) emerged as a result of the 1980 Amendments to the 1940 Act and the Investment Advisers Act of 1940 (The Advisers Act).  BDCs are publicly traded closed-end funds that make investments in private or thinly-traded public companies in the form of long-term debt or equity capital, with the goal of generating current income and/or capital growth.  BDCs can be internally or externally managed and qualify to elect to be taxed as "regulated investment companies" for federal tax purpose.
