In response to recent developments, including the Government Statement on the Role of Data Centres in Ireland’s Enterprise Strategy, CRU is undertaking a review of the processing of new large energy demand connections to the electricity and gas systems.
On 15 January 2024, following a Call for Evidence that closed in August 2023, CRU published a consultation paper entitled Review of Large Energy Users Connection Policy. The purpose of this consultation paper is to seek views on potential assessment criteria which the System Operators could use to assess Large Energy User (LEU) applications in the context of statutory national climate targets.
The aim of this review is to provide a pathway for new LEU connections to the electricity and gas systems which minimises the impact on national carbon emissions while taking into account capacity of the system in relation to supply of energy and grid infrastructure. Closing date for submissions is 26 February 2024.
