Janell Johnson is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US).
She counsels businesses in the complex areas of artificial intelligence, data privacy and cybersecurity, with a particular focus on assisting businesses in their compliance efforts with emerging comprehensive state privacy laws, such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), the Colorado Privacy Act (CPA) and the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act (VCDPA).
Janell also counsels clients on Federal sectoral privacy laws, including the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA), among other laws.
She also provides counsel to colleges and universities on regulatory compliance matters related to their participation in federal student financial assistance programs, accreditation, licensure and related regulatory concerns. Her practice and experience includes representing educational institutions before the US Department of Education, state educational oversight agencies, state attorneys general and accreditors.
Prior to joining Eversheds Sutherland, Janell worked for a DC-based, boutique law firm where she gained additional regulatory, litigation and transactional experience in the higher education sector.
