Back to Nature: Eversheds Sutherland appointed as sole legal adviser to Rebalance EarthMarch 13, 2025 Eversheds Sutherland has been appointed as the sole legal adviser to Rebalance Earth, the UK’s first boutique fund manager entirely focused on nature as an asset by financing nature as business-critical infrastructure. The global law firm will play a crucial role in establishing Rebalance Earth's innovative natural capital fund, which identifies catchments with high commercial activity where companies face significant water-related risks, such as flooding, drought, and water quality issues. It incentivises these companies to pay to restore these landscapes with multiple nature-based Solutions (NbS) by providing advice on the structuring of investments made by the fund once launched. Rebalance Earth’s approach to integrating NbS into long-term asset investments, such as pension schemes, aims to unlock the potential for sustainable growth and resilience. One key focus of the fund will be to restore natural landscapes at land and sea level by financing restoration projects and utilising technology to help mitigate climate and Nature-loss related risks, such as flooding and drought. Jeremy Goodwin, Partner and Head of Pensions at Eversheds Sutherland, commented: “We are truly delighted to have been appointed as the legal advisors for Rebalance Earth. At a crucial time when climate change and extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, how we view the natural world around us is no longer just a regulatory concern; these are now board-level strategic issues. We are looking forward to working with Rebalance Earth as their legal adviser as we help develop their fund for pension schemes and other institutional investors to enable their boards to address these issues.” Sarah Burnside, Partner at Eversheds Sutherland, commented: “We are thrilled to be working with Rebalance Earth on their new nature-focused fund. Everyone is impacted in some way by changes to the environment and the role of ESG in business has never been more valuable and important. We look forward to working with the team to not only help them establish the fund, but to also provide ongoing advice on the structure of investments designed to address real world risks.” Kirsty Wilman, COO of Rebalance Earth, commented: “We are delighted to appoint Eversheds Sutherland as our legal adviser following a competitive tender process. Their experience in innovative structuring in Private Markets is invaluable in our mission to recognise and scale Nature as a valuable asset. Together, we are building a financial system where Nature is valued as essential infrastructure for a thriving economy.” As part of Eversheds Sutherland’s commitment to being a responsible business, the firm integrates sustainable practices throughout all its operations. This is achieved through its work to help clients, people, and communities to thrive, and across the four pillars of its responsible business strategy: people, community, environment, and governance and ethics.
