Cynthia R. Shoss is a nationally recognized adviser on insurance regulatory matters.
She focuses on transformative transactions such as demutualizations, mergers and acquisitions, conversions and other restructurings that involve senior executives and Boards of Directors. She also assists clients with corporate governance, legislation, examinations and investigations, receiverships and insolvencies, compliance, AI, investments and other issues.
For more than 40 years, Cynthia has counseled clients in the various insurance sectors in the US and internationally, including life insurance, and annuities, property/casualty insurance, health insurance and reinsurance. She has worked with Fortune 500 companies, investment bankers, actuaries, strategic and financial investors, insurtech enterprises, brokers, trade associations, state departments of insurance and attorneys general and other law firms. Her insurance clients have included public companies, mutuals, mutual holding companies, fraternals, reciprocals and the Lloyd's market. She has authored books and articles and presented at conferences from London to New York to Tokyo on insurance industry issues.
Cynthia has served as Co-Chair of the firm's Global Board, as Co-Head of Global Insurance and as a member of the US Executive Committee. She formerly practiced at LeBoeuf Lamb Greene & MacRae and its successor firm where she served as Managing Partner of the firm's London office (at Lloyd’s) and Co-Chair of the Insurance Practice Group.
Cynthia was the first woman and second lawyer in private practice in the 100-year history of the Association of Life Insurance Counsel to receive its prestigious Buist M. Anderson Distinguished Service Award for lifetime service to the life insurance bar and industry. In 2018, she was inducted into the Tulane Law School Hall of Fame.
She has been ranked as a leading lawyer for years in all of the top legal directories, including Chambers (Senior Statesperson), The Legal 500 (Hall of Fame), New York Super Lawyers and others. She was named among 25 Women to Watch in Insurance, Risk Management and Employee Benefits Worldwide by Business Insurance and is a recipient of BTI Consulting Group's Client Service All-Star Award. She has been a member since 2001 of the Board of Overseers, and of the Executive Committee of the Board, of the Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science of St. John's University. She has served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Association of Life Insurance Counsel; former Chair of the Board of Trustees of Lawyers Alliance for New York and current Vice Chair of its Board of Advisors; former Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of The Risk Foundation and current Chair of the Board of Directors of Economic Mobility Corporation.
