Career development resources in the US
We offer customized programs to help integrate our attorneys into the firm.
Lateral associates and new associates attend a two-day informational program, with sessions taught by the firm's partners and professional staff. Topics include the firm's business model, how to get involved in pro bono and community service, managing your time, client development guidance, and advice on how to succeed as an associate.
Additionally, associates are assigned an advisor within their practice area who is available to answer questions and offer practical tips. Within the first few months of joining the firm, as-sociates are also assigned a partner mentor in our Career Planning Program.
Lateral partners and lateral counsel are sponsored by partner(s) responsible for their successful integration into the firm. Together, the partners develop a full integration plan, which includes introductions to key attorneys across each office and practice group, identifying client development opportunities, marketing and communications strategies and outlining action items for effectively transitioning their practice to Eversheds Sutherland.
Eversheds Sutherland Legal Education
Through ESLE, our comprehensive, nationally ranked in-house training program for lawyers and clients, we offer more than 100 substantive and skills-based programs year round at the firmwide and practice group level. Topics include cutting-edge legal developments, taking depositions, ethics and professionalism, finance and accounting, advanced legal writing, management skills (for senior associates and partners), negotiation and trial advocacy.
The Eversheds Sutherland’s Business Development Curriculum provides learning opportunities from theory to practice that support individual attorneys and teams in successfully developing, generating and sustaining client relationships. Because client relationships are built and nurtured by every team member regardless of seniority or role, the curriculum is designed to have a meaningful and measurable impact on the success of attorneys ranging from associates to senior partners and practice group leaders.
Career Planning Program
Our associates benefit from our nationally-recognized, structured approach to career planning with career guidelines, individualized career plans and partner plan advisors. Our career guidelines outline the firm's expectations of associates (including substantive skills for each practice group). The career plan allows each associate, based on their individual interests, to identify specific annual goals and action items for meeting those guidelines. Associates identify their preferred partner advisor, and meet with the advisor quarterly to discuss their plan and overall development.
Professional Credit
The Professional Development Department provides assistance in addressing CLE-related questions and issues for the firm's lawyers and clients. Our in-house ESLE courses are regularly awarded CLE credit in most jurisdictions. In addition, Professional Development helps facilitate CPE and SHRM credit.
