Eversheds Sutherland Partner Jeff Friedman is quoted in this Bloomberg Tax article discussing recent steps taken by New York and Washington, DC to enact consumer data excise taxes.
In the article, Jeff expresses concern with these proposals, mentioning they would run into many of the same legal issues and implementation questions as Maryland with its digital advertising gross revenues tax.
“Be careful about going into the laboratory and coming up with some Frankenstein-looking monster of a tax that no state or jurisdiction has done before,” Jeff said. “This one seems fun to talk about, but very difficult to implement.”
