San Diego Super Lawyers Recognize Four IP Eversheds Sutherland PartnersApril 01, 2021 SAN DIEGO—Eversheds Sutherland is pleased to announce that Partners Christopher C. Bolten, Jose L. Patiño and Nicola A. Pisano have been selected as top San Diego attorneys by Super Lawyers. Additionally, Partner Justin Gray has been recognized as a Rising Star. The designations are the result of an annual survey conducted by the publication, which focuses on professional achievement and peer recognition. Mr. Bolten focuses his practice on patent prosecution and intellectual property litigation. He advises clients in a number of fields, including medical devices such as ultrasound and X-ray imagers, neurostimulation systems, implantable mechanical devices, ablation devices, wound dressings, and medicine dispensers; telecommunications such as cellular, networking, and internet technologies; software; defense technologies such as signal processing and optical systems; and automotive technologies such as battery systems. Mr. Bolten’s practice also includes the preparation of noninfringement, invalidity, patentability, and freedom-to-operate opinions. He is experienced in representing a range of clients, from solo inventors and start-up companies to international corporations. Mr. Gray advises clients on intellectual property and complex litigation matters with a focus on computer software and hardware, medical devices, and telecommunications. He regularly counsels clients in federal courts across the country on cases involving patent infringement, trade secret protection, and copyright infringement. Mr. Gray’s extensive experience includes helping to secure a complete victory in the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on behalf of a manufacturer of dental implants, obtaining a precedential decision affirming the invalidity of a competitor’s patent. He also defended and obtained favorable settlements for a smartphone company in numerous patent infringement lawsuits and obtained a jury verdict of $147 million on a patent infringement lawsuit concerning a wireless mobile device management patent. Mr. Patiño is a patent litigation partner who serves as Partner in Charge of the San Diego Office. He represents companies in high-stakes intellectual property disputes, and has argued before the courts of 20 different states. Mr. Patiño has extensive experience with patent litigation-specific proceedings, including before the International Trade Commission, and as special intellectual property counsel in US Bankruptcy Court. Among prominent representations, he successfully defended Bridge Medical by securing a judgment of unenforceability of the asserted patent at trial and a precedential affirmance on appeal (McKesson Info Solutions v. Bridge Medical, 487 F.3d 897). He has represented companies in a variety of industries, including Actiontec, CenturyLink, Level 3 Communications, Dassault Systèmes Simulia Corporation, ESET, General Motors, Kyocera Corporation and Workplace Technologies Research, Inc. Mr. Pisano is a trial attorney with 30 years of experience litigating medical devices, medical device software, anti-malware software, wireless communications, biometric encryption software, telephony, Internet-based and mechanical technologies. He has served as trial counsel in more than 150 cases, and as lead counsel in more than 100, involving patent, trade secret, trade dress and copyright issues in federal district courts throughout the United States. Mr. Pisano has served as lead counsel in interference proceedings and inter partes reviews before the US Patent and Trademark Office, import matters pending before the US International Trade Commission and appeals before the Federal Circuit. He also has extensive experience representing hundreds of start-up and early-stage companies in developing patent portfolios in diverse technical fields, including a vast array of medical device technologies, software and machine learning, wireless communications, general computer, telephony and network technologies.
